Diaper Care
When I first started using cloth diapers, washing was what scared me the most. It is now my favorite part.
When changing a soiled diaper, shake off any solids into the toilet. We have a spatula in the bathroom designated for this along with a diaper sprayer to remove all tough solids before tossing into the diaper pail. Make sure to separate the insert from the pocket before putting into the pail.
Basic wash routine:
I have found that when washing your diapers it is best to keep it simple. Make sure you are using a quality cloth diaper detergent because this makes a big difference. It is much easier to start here and adjust your routine if needed.
Take your pail liner and toss everything into the washer. Make sure that you have secured all the aplix to the laundry tabs to keep the dreaded diaper snake away! Set your washer to a cold pre-wash on the highest water setting with no detergent. This will help to loosen any protein based stains and get all the ickys out.
With the water level still on high, start a hot wash with the recommended amount of detergent. For front loaders, you generally use less. The more water around the diapers in the wash insures a thorough cleaning/rinsing. Follow with cold rinse. Be sure to do a second rinse.
Tumble dry on medium/high heat or line dry. The sun is an excellent way to naturally remove stains and bacteria.
Again, these are only guidelines. There are many things that play a part in your wash routine including, water hardness and baby’s sensitivities. Should problems with your diapers arise (leaking, odor issues, etc) it is much easier to troubleshoot if you begin here.
