Getting Started

When I first started getting serious about cloth diapers, this was an area that completely overwhelmed me. Fortunately, it’s very simple. The amount of cloth diapers you need depends on two things: how frequently your baby needs changed and how often you plan to do laundry. The amount of times you need to change your baby depends on the age, so let’s look at that first.

Here are some approximate times a baby will need to be changed over a 2-3 day period.

  • Newborn to 3 months – 24-36 changes
  • 3 months to 1 year – 20-24 changes
  • 1 year to potty training – 16-20 changes

Washing every 2 days has worked extremely well for me. With that in mind, here are our recommendations:

  • 24-30 pre-folds/fitteds
  • 6-8 covers
  • 5-10 pocket or all-in-ones (24-30 if only using these)
  • 4-6 doublers (for heavy wetters or nighttime)
  • 2 snappies or 2 sets of pins
  • 24 cloth wipes
  • 2 wet bags (1 for home & 1 for diaper bag)
  • 1 diaper pail
  • 1 diaper sprayer (optional, but very handy)

You can use any combination of pre-folds, fitteds, pockets or all-in-ones. The most economical solution are the pre-folds and covers. Pockets and fitteds with covers are more convenient while all-in-ones are most like using disposables but are also the most expensive. Remember that these are just suggestions to help you get started. There is no right or wrong way to cloth diaper and you will find your way as you go.
